However, that very Genesis 9 run also included an early upset loss to Georgia Wolf main moxi – just another example of how volatile Marss can be in the current meta.

Upsets over some of this event’s top seeds wouldn’t be unprecedented even post-quarantine – Marss beat Kola back at Genesis 8 and Light at the Gimvitational. Marss comes into this event off a hot performance at Genesis 9, collecting several top 100 wins (including Dabuz) on his way to 9th. His performance in 2022 was a mixed bag of results, from great highs like 1 st at Lost Tech City and 7 th at Genesis 8 to tough lows, like 33 rd at Double Down and 65 th at Super Smash Con 2022. As has become standard post-quarantine, Marss is impossible to predict. Tweek’s bracket here is solid overall, with a few projected matches in top 8 that could go either way, but nothing that seems insurmountable, especially if he brings the level of play that he’s shown at his past few outings.Īlthough most of the top 6 seeds are positioned well to potentially take the event, there are several more players who could make big impacts. Lastly, LVL UP EXPO 2023’s 1st seed is Tweek, who’s coming off a career-best streak of 5 consecutive major top 8 finishes, despite breaking his grand finals streak at Genesis 9. With projected matches against Sonix in Winners’ Semis and Tweek in Winners’ Finals, two players that Light beat at Genesis 9, the biggest threat to Light’s bracket might be his top 8 qualifier match against Marss, who held a positive record on him pre-quarantine and beat him with his Joker secondary at The Gimvitational (though Light would later win the runback against the Joker that same tournament). Speaking of which, 2nd seed Light is my personal favorite to win the event. Then, Sonix will have to play Zomba into Light, two players he’s struggled against before, the latter of which having eliminated him at two of his last three majors. Capitancito has been demonstrating his proficiency in the Sonic matchup recently, having taken 6 sets off of Wrath at Las Vegas locals over the past three weeks. He has the potential to play fellow Dominican Capitancito to make top 16 if the Mii Gunner main is able to beat Quandale Dinglelingleton. His first projected match of winners’ side top 32 is Sticccy, a Utah Fox main who plays the same character as Sonix’s recent bracket demon, Light.

Speaking of Cosmos, if the new free agent and 4th seed at this event can overcome SALTONE, he’s slated to face Tweek in Winners’ Semis, a matchup that can go either way, with Cosmos winning at Shine 2022 but Tweek taking their most recent encounter at Genesis 9.Ĭoming off of some of the best performances of his career at Let’s Make Big Moves 2023 and Genesis 9, Sonix has perhaps the roughest looking bracket of the top 6 seeds. SALTONE/Kola, the 5th seed, has a tough top 16 qualifier match scheduled against Chronos, who previously beat him at Port Priority 6 (SALTONE has also struggled against other Snakes, notably ApolloKage), but his Winners’ Quarters match against Cosmos seems more favorable. Zomba, though he’s underperformed at his last two majors, has a great bracket ahead of him, with his path to Winners’ Finals as the 6th seed including Sonix and Light, two top players that he’s beaten before (though his sets with Light go back and forth, with Light winning their latest exchange at Let’s Make Big Moves 2023). Among the top 6 seeds, practically all of them seem to have a viable path to 1st place. Fitting for a Vegas event, predicting the outcome of this bracket will be a huge gamble no matter which way you look at it.
